University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, FAU) is a public research university in the cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany. Named after its founders, Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, FAU is the second largest state university in Bavaria. It comprises five faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines from the humanities and social sciences to engineering, natural sciences, and medicine.

History

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg was founded in 1742 in Erlangen, initially as a theological and philosophical college. It expanded over the centuries to include faculties of law, medicine, and sciences. The university played a significant role in the intellectual life of the German-speaking world, contributing to advancements in various fields. In 1961, the university incorporated the School of Business, Economics, and Social Sciences located in Nuremberg, becoming a comprehensive university.
