United Nations Economic and Social Council Membership

United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the economic, social, and related work of 15 UN specialized agencies, their functional commissions, and five regional commissions. Established by the United Nations Charter in 1945, ECOSOC has 54 members, which are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms. The council serves as a central forum for discussing international economic and social issues and formulating policy recommendations addressed to member states and the United Nations system.

Functions and Powers

Structure

ECOSOC's structure includes several bodies, such as: - Functional Commissions, like the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the Statistical Commission. - Regional Commissions, including the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). - Standing committees and expert bodies that address specific issues. - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and other specialized agencies and entities that report directly to ECOSOC.

Sessions

ECOSOC holds one substantive session each year, which alternates between New York and Geneva and includes a high-level segment where heads of state and government can discuss major economic, social, and environmental policy issues. Additionally, it holds several shorter sessions focused on organizational and procedural matters.

Challenges and Criticisms
