The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is one of the five regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It was established in 1947 to encourage economic cooperation among its member states. ESCAP's headquarters is located in Bangkok, Thailand.

History[edit]

ESCAP was originally founded as the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) to assist in post-war reconstruction efforts. In 1974, it was renamed to its current title to reflect the broader scope of its work.

Objectives[edit]

ESCAP aims to promote sustainable development, economic growth, and social progress in the Asia-Pacific region. It focuses on areas such as poverty reduction, trade and investment, transport, environmental sustainability, and disaster risk reduction.

Structure[edit]

ESCAP is composed of 53 member states and 9 associate members. The commission meets annually to discuss and address regional issues. The Executive Secretary, appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General, leads the organization.

Key Functions[edit]

  • Policy Dialogue: Facilitates discussions among member states on economic and social policies.
  • Research and Analysis: Conducts studies and provides data to support policy-making.
  • Technical Assistance: Offers support and training to member states in various development areas.
  • Advocacy: Promotes regional cooperation and integration.

Member States[edit]

ESCAP's membership includes countries from the Asia-Pacific region, such as China, India, Japan, Australia, and many others. It also includes associate members like Hong Kong and Macau.

Related Organizations[edit]

ESCAP works closely with other United Nations bodies, regional organizations, and international financial institutions to achieve its goals. It collaborates with entities such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank.
