Umbo

Umbo (pronounced: /ˈʌmboʊ/) is a term used in various fields of medicine. It is derived from the Latin word umbo, meaning the boss of a shield.

Anatomy

In anatomy, umbo refers to a rounded elevation or protuberance, particularly on the surface of a bone or shell. The term is often used to describe the central part of the tympanic membrane (eardrum) in the human ear, known as the umbo of tympanic membrane. This is the point of maximum retraction and is attached to the malleus, one of the three tiny bones in the ear that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.

Botany

In botany, umbo is used to describe a similar protrusion or bump, particularly on the surface of a leaf or fruit. For example, the umbo of a leaf is the raised area in the center of a leaf, often where the veins converge.
