The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), pronounced as /ˈjuː.ɛs.diː.eɪ/, is a department of the United States federal government that oversees policies related to farming, forestry, rural economic development, and food. It was established in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln.

The term "US Department of Agriculture" is derived from its function. The word "Agriculture" comes from the Latin agricultūra, from ager (field) and cultūra (cultivation). It refers to the science, art, or practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock.
