Tricare

Tricare (pronounced "try-care") is a health care program of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System. Tricare provides civilian health benefits for U.S Armed Forces military personnel, military retirees, and their dependents, including some members of the Reserve Component.

Etymology

The name "Tricare" is derived from the combination of the words "tri-" (a prefix meaning three) and "care", indicating the program's original purpose of providing care for three groups: active duty personnel, military retirees, and their dependents.

History

Tricare was established by the Department of Defense in 1993 to replace the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS). The program was intended to improve access to care, maintain high standards of care, and contain costs.

Coverage

Tricare offers several different health plans. These include Tricare Prime, Tricare Select, Tricare Reserve Select, Tricare Retired Reserve, Tricare Young Adult, and Tricare For Life. Each plan has specific eligibility requirements and offers different benefits.
