Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication, and wear. Tribology is a multidisciplinary field that draws on many academic fields, including mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and physics. The term was coined in the 1960s from the Greek word tribos, meaning 'rubbing' or 'to rub', describing the actions that lead to wear and the generation of friction.

Friction

Lubrication

Lubrication is the process or technique of using a lubricant to reduce friction and wear between two surfaces in contact. It can take the form of a liquid (e.g., oil, water), solid (e.g., graphite, molybdenum disulfide), or gas (e.g., air), depending on the application. Lubrication can be classified into several regimes, including hydrodynamic, boundary, and mixed lubrication, each depending on the thickness of the lubricant film and the operating conditions of the surfaces.

Wear

Wear is the process of material loss from one or both of two solid surfaces in relative motion. Types of wear include adhesive wear, abrasive wear, corrosive wear, and surface fatigue. Understanding the mechanisms of wear is crucial for designing systems that can withstand long-term use without significant degradation.

Applications

Tribology is integral to the design and operation of countless mechanical systems. In the automotive industry, it is essential for the development of more efficient engines, transmissions, and brakes. In manufacturing, tribology principles are used to enhance the durability and efficiency of machinery and tools.
