Tree peony
== Tree Peony ==
The Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) is a species of peony native to China. Unlike the herbaceous peony, the tree peony is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 1.5-3 meters tall. It is known for its large, showy flowers and its longevity, with some plants living for over a century.
Description
Tree peonies have woody stems that remain above ground throughout the year, unlike the herbaceous peonies whose stems die back to the ground in winter. The leaves are large, compound, and deeply lobed. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, can be up to 20 cm in diameter and come in a variety of colors including white, pink, red, and yellow.
Cultivation
Tree peonies prefer well-drained soil and a position in full sun to partial shade. They are hardy plants but can be sensitive to transplanting. It is recommended to plant them in a permanent location where they can remain undisturbed. They require minimal pruning, usually just the removal of dead or weak wood.
History and Cultural Significance
Tree peonies have been cultivated in China for over a thousand years and are highly regarded in Chinese culture. They are often referred to as the "King of Flowers" and symbolize wealth, honor, and prosperity. The city of Luoyang in China is famous for its tree peony gardens and hosts an annual peony festival.
Varieties
There are many cultivars of tree peonies, each with unique flower forms and colors. Some popular varieties include:
- Paeonia suffruticosa 'Yachiyo Tsubaki'
- Paeonia suffruticosa 'Shimane Chojuraku'
- Paeonia suffruticosa 'Kinkaku'
Related Species
Tree peonies are closely related to other species in the genus Paeonia, including the herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora) and the Itoh peony (Paeonia × lemoinei).
