TraceTogether
TraceTogether
TraceTogether (/ˈtreɪs.təˌɡɛð.ər/) is a digital contact tracing application developed by the Government Technology Agency of Singapore to slow the spread of COVID-19 by identifying close contacts of confirmed cases.
Etymology
The term "TraceTogether" is a compound word formed from the English words "trace" and "together", indicating the app's purpose of tracing the spread of the virus collectively.
Function
TraceTogether uses Bluetooth signals to detect other TraceTogether users in close proximity. When two users are near each other, their phones exchange anonymised IDs, which are encrypted and stored locally on each user's device. If a user is diagnosed with COVID-19, they can choose to upload their data to a secure server, where it can be decrypted and used to notify close contacts.
Privacy
TraceTogether has been designed with privacy in mind. The app does not collect or store users' locations; instead, it uses Bluetooth to log the proximity and duration of encounters between users. All data is encrypted and kept on the user's phone, and is automatically deleted after 25 days.
