Torreya californica

Torreya californica, commonly known as the California nutmeg, is a species of conifer in the yew family (Taxaceae). It is native to California, United States, where it is found in the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada.
Description[edit]
Torreya californica is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 25 meters (82 feet) tall. The leaves are needle-like, 2–5 cm long, and 3 mm broad, with a sharp spine at the tip. The leaves are arranged spirally on the shoots but twisted at the base to lie in two flat ranks on either side of the shoot.
The tree produces seeds that are 2–4 cm long, with a fleshy outer layer. The seeds resemble those of the nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), hence the common name "California nutmeg," although the two plants are not closely related.
Habitat[edit]
Torreya californica is typically found in mixed evergreen forests, often on north-facing slopes and in canyons. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and is often found near streams and rivers.
Distribution[edit]
The species is endemic to California, with its range extending from the Klamath Mountains in the north to the Santa Cruz Mountains in the south. It is also found in the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Ecology[edit]
Torreya californica plays a role in its ecosystem by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species. The seeds are consumed by birds and small mammals, which help in seed dispersal.
Conservation[edit]
The species is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. However, habitat destruction and climate change could pose future risks to its populations.
Uses[edit]
Historically, the wood of Torreya californica was used by Native Americans for making tools and other items. The tree is also sometimes planted as an ornamental due to its attractive foliage and form.
Taxonomy[edit]
Torreya californica was first described by the botanist John Torrey in 1854. It is one of the five species in the genus Torreya, which is part of the family Taxaceae.
