Tom Hanks
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker. Known for both his comedic and dramatic roles, Hanks is one of the most popular and recognizable film stars worldwide and is regarded as an American cultural icon. He has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards out of six nominations.
Early life[edit]
Hanks was born in Concord, California, to hospital worker Janet Marylyn (née Frager) and itinerant cook Amos Mefford Hanks. His mother was of Portuguese descent, while his father had English ancestry. Hanks's parents divorced in 1960. His three oldest siblings went with their father, while the youngest, Jim, remained with their mother in Red Bluff, California.

Early work[edit]
Hanks began his acting career in the 1970s with small roles in television and stage productions. He gained prominence in the 1980s with a string of comedy films that highlighted his comedic talent, including Splash (1984), Bachelor Party (1984), and Big (1988), for which he received his first Academy Award for Best Actor nomination.
Breakthrough and success[edit]
Hanks's career reached new heights in the 1990s with critically acclaimed performances in films such as Philadelphia (1993), for which he won his first Academy Award for Best Actor, and Forrest Gump (1994), which earned him a second consecutive Academy Award for Best Actor. Other notable films from this period include Apollo 13 (1995), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and The Green Mile (1999).
2000s to present[edit]
In the 2000s, Hanks continued to deliver strong performances in films such as Cast Away (2000), Catch Me If You Can (2002), and The Terminal (2004). He also ventured into directing and producing, with notable projects including the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010).
Hanks has also voiced the character Sheriff Woody in the Toy Story franchise since 1995. His recent work includes roles in Sully (2016), The Post (2017), and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).
Personal life[edit]
Hanks married actress Samantha Lewes in 1978, and they had two children, Colin and Elizabeth. The couple divorced in 1987. In 1988, Hanks married actress Rita Wilson, with whom he has two sons, Chester (Chet) and Truman.
