Titanium Biocompatibility
Titanium Biocompatibility (pronunciation: /taɪˈteɪniəm/ /ˌbaɪoʊkəmˌpætəˈbɪlɪti/) refers to the property of Titanium that allows it to coexist with living tissues without causing any adverse reactions. The term "biocompatibility" is derived from the Greek words "bios" meaning life and "compatibilis" meaning suitable.
Etymology
The term "Titanium" is derived from the Greek mythology Titans, the first sons of the earth. The term "Biocompatibility" is a combination of "bio" meaning life and "compatibility" indicating a state in which two things are able to exist or occur together without problems or conflict.
Overview
Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density, and high strength. Titanium is resistant to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine.
Titanium's biocompatibility makes it useful in a variety of medical applications, including surgical implements and implants, such as hip balls and sockets (joint replacement) and dental implants that can stay in place for up to 20 years. The human body accepts titanium as if it were its own material, which is why it is also used in the construction of artificial heart valves, pacemaker cases, and other medical devices.
