Tipelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used primarily in the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis. It functions by blocking the action of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory chemicals the body releases after coming in contact with an allergen or irritant.

Mechanism of Action

Tipelukast works by inhibiting the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor, specifically the CysLT1 receptor. Leukotrienes are produced by the immune system and contribute to inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production in the airways. By blocking these receptors, tipelukast helps to reduce inflammation and relax the airways, making it easier to breathe.

Clinical Uses

Tipelukast is primarily used in the treatment of chronic asthma and to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It is not intended for the relief of acute asthma attacks but is used as a maintenance therapy to prevent symptoms.

Asthma

In patients with asthma, tipelukast helps to prevent wheezing, difficulty breathing, and chest tightness. It is often used as an adjunct therapy in patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids.

Allergic Rhinitis

For allergic rhinitis, tipelukast helps to alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. It is particularly useful in patients who have both asthma and allergic rhinitis, providing a dual benefit.

Side Effects

Common side effects of tipelukast include headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea and diarrhea. Rarely, it may cause mood changes or allergic reactions.

Administration

Tipelukast is administered orally, usually once daily. The dosage may vary based on the patient's age, weight, and severity of symptoms.
