Timeline of the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec

The Timeline of the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec refers to the period and events surrounding the spread of the novel coronavirus (pronounced kuh-RO-nuh-vahy-ruhs, from the Greek koronos meaning "crown") in the Canadian province of Quebec.

Origin

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 (pronounced KOH-vid nyn-TEEN, an acronym from COronaVIrus Disease 2019) in Quebec was reported on February 27, 2020. The patient had recently returned from a trip to Iran, a country heavily affected by the pandemic.

Spread

The virus spread rapidly throughout the province, with the first death reported on March 18, 2020. By the end of March, Quebec had the highest number of cases in Canada. The spread was particularly severe in long-term care homes, known as CHSLDs (pronounced sheh-SLED, an acronym from Centre d'hébergement de soins de longue durée).

Response

The Quebec government, led by Premier François Legault, declared a public health emergency on March 13, 2020. Measures included closing schools, banning gatherings, and eventually implementing a province-wide lockdown. The government's response has been both praised and criticized, with some arguing that measures were implemented too late.

Vaccination

Vaccination against COVID-19 in Quebec began in December 2020, with the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine administered to healthcare workers and residents of long-term care homes. As of September 2021, over 80% of the eligible population in Quebec has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
