Thomas Taggart

Thomas Taggart (November 17, 1856 – March 6, 1929) was an Irish-American politician who served as the mayor of Indianapolis and was a notable figure in the Democratic Party both at the state and national levels. Taggart was influential in the development of Indiana's political landscape in the early 20th century and also played a significant role in the national Democratic politics.

Early Life

Born in County Monaghan, Ireland, Taggart immigrated to the United States with his family at a young age. They settled in Indiana, where he later began his career in the hospitality industry before venturing into politics.

Political Career

Taggart's political career began in local Indianapolis politics, where he first served as city auditor before being elected mayor in 1895. As mayor, he was known for his efforts to modernize the city, including improvements in public infrastructure and utilities. His tenure saw significant urban development, including the establishment of the city's first comprehensive sewage system.

After serving as mayor, Taggart remained a powerful figure in state and national politics. He was instrumental in the Democratic Party's activities in Indiana, serving multiple times as the chairman of the Indiana Democratic Committee. He was also involved in national politics, serving as a member of the Democratic National Committee and playing a key role in organizing the party's national conventions.

Later Life and Legacy

After his active political career, Taggart continued to influence Democratic politics and was involved in various business ventures, including the hotel industry. He passed away in 1929 in Indianapolis, leaving behind a legacy of political and civic contributions.
