Therapeutic Community

A Therapeutic Community (pronounced: thair-uh-PYOO-tik kuh-MYOO-ni-tee) is a form of long-term residential treatment for individuals with chronic substance use disorders or other mental health conditions. The term originated in the mid-20th century and is often associated with the work of George De Leon, a prominent psychologist and researcher in the field of addiction treatment.

Etymology

The term "Therapeutic Community" is derived from the Greek word "therapeia" meaning "healing" and the Latin word "communitas" meaning "community". It reflects the approach's emphasis on the community as a key agent of change.

Definition

A Therapeutic Community is a group-based intervention in a residential setting which helps individuals with substance use disorders or mental health conditions. It uses the community, including other residents, staff, and the social context, as active components of treatment. Therapeutic Communities focus on the whole person and overall lifestyle changes, not simply abstinence from drug use or symptom reduction.
