The Who

The Who are an English rock band formed in London in 1964. The primary lineup consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist and singer Pete Townshend, bass guitarist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide.

History

The Who were formed in 1964 by Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. They became known for their energetic live performances, which often included instrument destruction. Their first single, "I Can't Explain", was released in 1965 and reached the UK top ten.

Early Years

The band's early work was marked by mod influences and a series of hit singles, including "My Generation", "Substitute", and "I Can See for Miles". Their 1967 album, The Who Sell Out, was a concept album that satirized the commercialism of the music industry.

Rock Operas and Concept Albums

In 1969, The Who released Tommy, a rock opera that became a critical and commercial success. This was followed by Who's Next in 1971, which included hits like "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". In 1973, they released another rock opera, Quadrophenia.

Later Years and Legacy

The band continued to release albums and tour throughout the 1970s and 1980s, despite the death of Keith Moon in 1978. Kenney Jones joined as the drummer, and the band released Face Dances in 1981 and It's Hard in 1982. The Who disbanded in 1983 but have reunited several times since, including a major tour in 1989 and the release of Endless Wire in 2006.

Influence and Impact

The Who have been credited with pioneering the rock opera and influencing genres such as punk rock, hard rock, and power pop. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have received numerous awards for their contributions to music.
