The Life of Riley is an American situation comedy that originally aired on the radio from 1944 to 1951, and later transitioned to television from 1949 to 1958. The show was created by Irving Brecher and starred William Bendix as the main character, Chester A. Riley.

Radio Series[edit]

The radio series of The Life of Riley debuted on the Blue Network on January 16, 1944. The show was a significant success and was later moved to the NBC network. The character of Chester A. Riley, a bumbling but good-hearted aircraft worker, became a beloved figure in American popular culture. The radio series concluded on June 29, 1951.

Television Series[edit]

The television adaptation of The Life of Riley premiered on NBC on October 4, 1949. The show initially starred Jackie Gleason as Chester A. Riley, but he was later replaced by William Bendix, who had originally played the role on the radio. The television series ran until March 8, 1958, and was one of the early successful sitcoms on American television.
