Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving (pronunciation: /θæŋksˈɡɪvɪŋ/) is a national holiday celebrated in various countries, primarily in the United States and Canada. The etymology of the term "Thanksgiving" is derived from the act of giving thanks, a show of gratitude.

History

The history of Thanksgiving dates back to the 17th century when the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation's first Thanksgiving. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Traditions

Thanksgiving traditions vary by country and region, but the holiday is generally marked by a time of family gatherings, feasting, and expressions of gratitude. In the United States, the holiday is often associated with the Pilgrims and a feast they shared with the Wampanoag Indians in 1621. Traditional foods include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Thanksgiving in Other Countries

In addition to the United States and Canada, several other nations also celebrate similar holidays. These include Liberia, where Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Thursday of November, and Grenada, which celebrates on October 25.
