Teucrium scordium
A species of flowering plant in the mint family
Teucrium scordium, commonly known as water germander, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is native to Europe and parts of Asia, where it typically grows in wet habitats such as marshes and riverbanks.
Description
Teucrium scordium is a perennial herb that can reach a height of 10 to 30 centimeters. The plant has a creeping growth habit, with stems that root at the nodes. The leaves are opposite, oblong to lanceolate, and have a serrated margin. The plant produces small, pink to purple flowers that are arranged in whorls along the stem.
Habitat and Distribution
Teucrium scordium is found in a variety of wetland habitats, including marshes, fens, and along the edges of rivers and streams. It prefers calcareous soils and can often be found in areas with high moisture levels. The species is distributed across Europe and extends into parts of Asia.
Ecology
Teucrium scordium plays a role in wetland ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various insects. The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects, which are attracted to the plant's nectar.
Uses
Historically, Teucrium scordium has been used in traditional medicine for its purported medicinal properties. It was believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects, although its use has declined in modern times.
Conservation
In some regions, Teucrium scordium is considered a species of conservation concern due to habitat loss and changes in land use. Efforts to conserve wetland habitats are important for the preservation of this species.
