Termite

Termite (/ˈtɜːrmaɪt/), from the Latin termes meaning "woodworm", is a group of eusocial insects that, along with the related cockroaches, constitute the order Blattodea. Termites were once classified in a separate order from cockroaches, but recent phylogenetic studies indicate that they evolved from close ancestors of cockroaches during the Jurassic or Triassic.

Etymology

The word "termite" is derived from the Latin word termes, which means "woodworm". The term was first used in English in the late 18th century.

Description

Termites are known for their destructive effects on wooden structures and construction. Through mounds, termites are able to remain in their colony, which could include up to 2 million members. They are a crucial part of the ecosystem as they aid in the decomposition process of dead plants and trees.

Types of Termites

There are approximately 2,600 species of termites. The three main types of termites are the Subterranean termite, Drywood termite, and Dampwood termite. Each type has a unique set of characteristics and behaviors that differentiate them from one another.

Subterranean Termite

Subterranean termites live in underground colonies or in moist secluded areas aboveground. They build distinctive "mud tubes" to gain access to food sources and to protect themselves from open air.

Drywood Termite

Drywood termites infest dry wood and do not require contact with the soil. They often infest attic wood or pieces of furniture.

Dampwood Termite

Dampwood termites are normally larger in size than other termite species. They, like their name suggests, infest wood with a high moisture content.
