Teratospermia
Teratospermia
Teratospermia (pronounced: te-ra-to-sper-mia) is a medical condition characterized by the presence of sperm with abnormal morphology that affects fertility in males.
Etymology
The term "Teratospermia" is derived from the Greek words "teras" meaning monster and "sperma" meaning seed.
Definition
Teratospermia is a condition where the sperm morphology, or the size and shape of sperm, is abnormal. This can lead to male infertility. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines teratospermia as having more than 96% of spermatozoa with abnormal forms in the ejaculate.
Causes
The exact cause of teratospermia is unknown, but it may be associated with various factors such as genetic defects, infections, exposure to certain chemicals and drugs, and varicocele.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of teratospermia is typically made through a semen analysis, which examines the number, shape, and movement of sperm.
Treatment
Treatment for teratospermia depends on the underlying cause. It may include medications, surgery, or assisted reproductive techniques such as Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or In vitro fertilization (IVF).
