Rutilus heckelii
Rutilus heckelii[edit]

Rutilus heckelii, commonly known as the Danube roach, is a species of freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae. This species is native to the Danube River basin and is found in various countries across Central Europe.
Description[edit]
Rutilus heckelii is a medium-sized fish, typically reaching lengths of 20 to 30 centimeters. It has a streamlined body with a silvery sheen, which is characteristic of many members of the genus Rutilus. The scales are large and reflective, providing camouflage in the water. The fins are generally a pale yellow or orange, with the dorsal and caudal fins being more pronounced.
Habitat[edit]
This species inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. It prefers areas with abundant vegetation, which provides both food and shelter. The Danube roach is adaptable to a range of environmental conditions but is most commonly found in clear, oxygen-rich waters.
Diet[edit]
Rutilus heckelii is an omnivorous species. Its diet consists of aquatic plants, invertebrates, and small crustaceans. During the warmer months, it may also consume algae and zooplankton. The species is known for its opportunistic feeding habits, which allow it to thrive in various environments.
Reproduction[edit]
The breeding season for Rutilus heckelii occurs in the spring, typically from April to June. Spawning takes place in shallow waters with dense vegetation. Females lay adhesive eggs on submerged plants, where they are fertilized by the males. The eggs hatch within a week, and the fry remain in the vegetation until they are large enough to venture into open water.
Conservation[edit]
While Rutilus heckelii is not currently considered endangered, its populations are affected by habitat degradation, pollution, and the construction of dams, which alter the natural flow of rivers. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining clean waterways and preserving natural habitats to ensure the survival of this species.
