Talk - (pronounced) mist or powder form of the mineral magnesium silicate used to prevent malignant pleural effusions from recurring. Malignant pleural effusion is a condition in which cancer causes an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. When talc is given through a tube inserted into the pleural space, it causes the space to close, preventing fluid from collecting there. Talc is a type of sclerosant.
