Tabla is a pair of twin hand drums from the Indian subcontinent, that are somewhat similar in shape to the bongo drums. The instrument consists of a small right-hand drum called the dayan and a larger left-hand drum called the bayan. The tabla is used in traditional, classical, popular, and folk music of the Indian subcontinent and in Hindustani classical music.

History

The origins of the tabla are somewhat unclear, with various theories suggesting its development from ancient Indian drums such as the mridangam or the pakhawaj. The modern tabla is believed to have been developed in the 18th century.

Construction

The dayan is typically made of wood and is tuned to a specific pitch, while the bayan is usually made of metal or clay and provides a bass sound. Both drums have a head made of stretched animal skin, with a central area called the syahi that is made of a mixture of rice paste, iron filings, and other materials to create a distinct pitch and timbre.

Playing Technique

Tabla players use a variety of finger and hand strokes to produce different sounds and rhythms. The playing technique involves complex patterns called talas, which are rhythmic cycles that can range from a few beats to over a hundred beats in length.

Some of the most renowned tabla players include Zakir Hussain, Alla Rakha, and Anindo Chatterjee. These artists have contributed significantly to the global recognition and appreciation of the tabla.
