TRICARE (pronounced "try-care") is a health care program of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System. TRICARE provides civilian health benefits for U.S Armed Forces military personnel, military retirees, and their dependents, including some members of the Reserve Component.

Etymology

The name "TRICARE" is derived from the combination of the words "tri-" (a prefix meaning three) and "care", indicating the program's original purpose of providing care for three groups: active duty personnel, military retirees, and their dependents.

Overview

TRICARE is a major part of the Military Health System and is overseen by the Defense Health Agency (DHA). The program is managed by regional contractors and includes several different plans, each designed to meet the needs of different groups within the military community.

Plans

TRICARE offers several different health plans, including TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, TRICARE Reserve Select, TRICARE Retired Reserve, TRICARE Young Adult, and TRICARE For Life. Each plan has specific eligibility requirements and offers different benefits.

Eligibility

Eligibility for TRICARE is determined by the Department of Defense and is generally available to active duty military members, military retirees, and their dependents. Some members of the Reserve Component may also be eligible for TRICARE.
