Suspenders (also known as braces in British English) are fabric or leather straps worn over the shoulders to hold up trousers. The straps may be elasticated, either entirely or only at attachment ends, and most straps are of a woven cloth forming an X or Y shape at the back. Suspenders are attached to trousers with clips or buttons using leather tabs at the ends.

History

The invention of suspenders is attributed to Albert Thurston in 1820, due to the high cut of mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century trousers. Before the invention of belts with loops, suspenders were the preferred method for holding trousers up. Early suspenders were attached with buttons sewn onto the waistband of trousers, a method that is still preferred by traditionalists.
