Susan Hayhurst
Susan Hayhurst (1827–1909) was an American pharmacist and educator. She is recognized as the first female graduate of a pharmacy school in the United States.
Early life
Hayhurst was born in 1827 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was raised in a Quaker family and was educated at the Friends' Central School in Philadelphia.
Career
In 1883, Hayhurst graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, becoming the first woman to graduate from a pharmacy school in the United States. She was also the first woman to be admitted to the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Hayhurst worked as a pharmacist for over 20 years at the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia. She also taught chemistry and pharmacy at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she was the first woman to hold a faculty position.
Legacy
Hayhurst's pioneering role in pharmacy education and her contributions to the field of pharmacy have been recognized by several organizations. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy awards the Susan Hayhurst Award annually to a woman who has made significant contributions to the field of pharmacy.
