Suriname (pronunciation: /ˈsʊrɪnæm/), officially known as the Republic of Suriname, is a country on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south.
Etymology
The name Suriname may derive from an indigenous people called Surinen, who inhabited the area at the time of European contact.
Geography
Suriname is the smallest country in South America. The country is part of the Guiana Shield, and its geographic location places it in the Amazon Basin. It lies between latitudes 2° and 6°N, and longitudes 54° and 58°W.

Health care in Suriname is divided into public and private sectors. The Ministry of Health is responsible for managing and financing the public health sector.
