Surgisphere (/ˈsɜːrdʒɪsfɪər/; from the Latin surgere, "to rise", and the Greek sphaira, "sphere") is a health services data analytics and platform company. It was founded in 2008 and is based in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
History
Surgisphere was founded by Dr. Sapan Desai, who is a vascular surgeon. The company claims to have a database of anonymized patient data from hospitals and healthcare institutions all over the world. This database is used to provide insights and analytics to improve patient outcomes and hospital performance.
Controversy
In 2020, Surgisphere came under scrutiny when two high-profile medical studies, which used data provided by the company, were retracted by The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. The studies were about the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine in treating COVID-19. The retractions occurred after concerns were raised about the veracity of the data provided by Surgisphere.
