Sudomotor

Sudomotor (pronunciation: soo-doh-mo-tor) is a term used in medicine to describe the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, causing perspiration. The term is derived from the Latin word "sudor" meaning sweat, and the Greek word "motor" meaning mover.

Function

The sweat glands are responsible for the production and excretion of sweat, a process that is controlled by the sudomotor nerves. These nerves are part of the autonomic nervous system, which controls various involuntary body functions. The sudomotor nerves are specifically part of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's response to stress, including the production of sweat.

Sudomotor Dysfunction

When the sudomotor nerves are not functioning properly, it can lead to a condition known as sudomotor dysfunction. This can result in either excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, or insufficient sweating, known as anhidrosis. Both conditions can lead to various health problems, including skin conditions and difficulties with temperature regulation.

Sudomotor Testing

There are several tests that can be used to assess the function of the sudomotor nerves. These include the QSART (Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test), the TST (Thermoregulatory Sweat Test), and the SST (Silastic Sweat Test). These tests can help to diagnose conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, Parkinson's disease, and multiple system atrophy, which can all cause sudomotor dysfunction.
