Stuart Threipland

Stuart Threipland (1716–1805) was a prominent Scottish physician and Jacobite. He is best known for his role as the personal physician to Charles Edward Stuart, also known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie," during the Jacobite rising of 1745.
Early Life[edit]
Stuart Threipland was born in 1716 in Fingask Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of Sir David Threipland, 2nd Baronet of Fingask, and his wife, Katherine Smythe. The Threipland family were staunch supporters of the Jacobite cause, which sought to restore the House of Stuart to the British throne.
Medical Career[edit]
Threipland studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, one of the leading medical schools of the time. After completing his studies, he established a successful medical practice in Edinburgh. His expertise and reputation as a physician grew, and he became well-respected in medical circles.
Jacobite Rising of 1745[edit]
During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Threipland served as the personal physician to Charles Edward Stuart. He accompanied the Jacobite army throughout the campaign, providing medical care to the wounded and sick. Threipland's dedication to the Jacobite cause was unwavering, and he remained with the army until its defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
Later Life and Legacy[edit]
After the failure of the Jacobite rising, Threipland faced persecution for his involvement. He went into hiding and eventually fled to France, where he continued to practice medicine. In 1763, he was able to return to Scotland after receiving a pardon. Threipland resumed his medical practice and continued to contribute to the field of medicine until his death in 1805.
Stuart Threipland's legacy is remembered for his contributions to medicine and his unwavering support for the Jacobite cause. His life and work are commemorated in various historical records and he remains a notable figure in Scottish history.
