Structural engineering (/ˈstrʌktʃərəl ˌɛndʒɪˈnɪərɪŋ/) is a sub-discipline of Civil engineering that deals with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. The term "structural" was first used in relation to engineering by Jean-Rondelet in the late 18th century.
Etymology
The term "structural" comes from the Latin word "structura" meaning "a fitting together, building." The term "engineering" comes from the Latin word "ingenium" meaning "cleverness."
