Stoner film
Stoner film is a subgenre of comedy film that revolves around the use of cannabis. Usually, such movies show cannabis use in a comic and positive fashion. Cannabis use is one of the main themes, and inspires much of the plot. They are often representative of counterculture movements and are meant to challenge the norms of society.
History
The origin of the stoner film genre can be traced back to the 1970s. The genre was largely popularized by the film Up in Smoke (1978) starring Cheech & Chong, which is considered one of the greatest stoner films of all time. The genre gained mainstream acceptance in the 1990s with films like Dazed and Confused (1993) and The Big Lebowski (1998).
Characteristics
Stoner films are characterized by their emphasis on humor and absurd situations. The protagonists are usually recreational users of cannabis, and much of the humor is derived from their altered perceptions and actions while under the influence. The plot often involves a quest for more cannabis, leading to a series of comic misadventures.
Notable Films
Some notable films in the stoner genre include Pineapple Express (2008), Half Baked (1998), Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), and Friday (1995). These films have contributed significantly to the popularity and development of the genre.
Impact and Influence
The stoner film genre has had a significant impact on popular culture, influencing music, television, and literature. It has also played a role in shaping public perceptions and attitudes towards cannabis use and legalization.
Criticism
Critics of the genre argue that it glorifies drug use and promotes a harmful lifestyle. However, proponents argue that these films are simply a form of escapism and satire, and are not meant to be taken seriously.
