Stomach pain (pronunciation: /ˈstʌmək peɪn/), also known as abdominal pain, is a sensation of discomfort or distress in the area between the chest and the pelvis. The term originates from the Latin words "stomachus" meaning "gullet", and "pain" from the Old French "peine" meaning "punishment".

Causes

Stomach pain can be caused by a variety of conditions. These include, but are not limited to, Gastritis, Peptic Ulcer, Gallstones, Appendicitis, and Gastroenteritis. It can also be a symptom of more serious conditions such as Pancreatitis, Stomach Cancer, or Bowel Obstruction.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of stomach pain typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Further diagnostic tests may include blood tests, urine tests, ultrasounds, endoscopies, and CT scans.

Treatment

Treatment for stomach pain depends on the underlying cause. This may include medication for conditions such as gastritis or peptic ulcers, surgery for conditions such as appendicitis or gallstones, and lifestyle changes for conditions such as gastroenteritis.
