Starfish or sea stars are echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. The term "starfish" is also used in a broader sense to include the closely related species such as brittle stars and basket stars.

Etymology
The term "starfish" is derived from the star-like appearance of its body structure. The term "Asteroidea" comes from the Greek "aster" meaning star, and "eidos" meaning form or shape.
Description
Starfish are marine invertebrates. They typically have a central disc and five arms, though some species have more. The upper surface is often brightly coloured and can be smooth, granular or spiny. Starfish have tube feet operated by a hydraulic system and a mouth at the centre of the oral or lower surface.
