Spring Mill, Pennsylvania
Spring Mill, Pennsylvania is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The community is part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, and is situated along the Schuylkill River.
Geography
Spring Mill is located at 40°04′38″N 75°17′14″W. The CDP has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land. It is primarily a residential community, with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.
History
The area now known as Spring Mill was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the community grew around a mill that was built on the Schuylkill River. The mill, which gave the community its name, was a vital part of the local economy for many years.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,324 people, 1,312 households, and 868 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,540.0 people per square mile (2,137.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.7% White, 3.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.
Education
Spring Mill is served by the Colonial School District. Students in grades K-12 attend schools in the district, including Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Transportation
Spring Mill is served by the SEPTA regional rail system, with the Spring Mill station on the Manayunk/Norristown Line providing service to Philadelphia.
Notable people
Several notable people have lived in Spring Mill, including John Salmons, a former professional basketball player for the NBA, and John Havlicek, a Hall of Fame basketball player for the Boston Celtics.
