Speculum

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Speculums)

Speculum is a medical tool used by healthcare professionals to investigate body orifices. The term derives from Latin speculum, meaning "mirror". The speculum aids in the visualization of areas that are difficult to see, such as the vagina in gynecological examinations or the ear canal in otoscopic examinations.

Types of Specula[edit]

There are several types of specula used in medical practice, each designed for specific examinations.

  • Vaginal Speculum: A vaginal speculum, used in gynecological examinations, is an instrument that allows a doctor to examine the vagina and the cervix. The device is inserted into the vagina to dilate it for examination of the vagina and cervix.
  • Nasal Speculum: A nasal speculum is a medical tool used in the examination of the nose. It is used to widen the nostrils for better visualization of the nasal passages.
  • Aural Speculum: An aural speculum is used for examining the ear canal and tympanic membrane. It is inserted into the ear to allow for a clear view of the ear canal and eardrum.
  • Anal Speculum: An anal speculum is a device used to view the inside of the rectum. It is often used in the diagnosis of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and other rectal conditions.

History[edit]

The speculum has been in use since ancient times, with evidence of specula used in Roman times for gynecological examinations. The design and materials have evolved over time, with modern specula being made of plastic or stainless steel.
