Spectrometer is an instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, primarily to measure the spectral power distribution of a source. The term spectrometer is often used interchangeably with spectrophotometer, though the latter is more specifically focused on measuring the intensity of light as a function of wavelength. Principles of Operation[edit]
A spectrometer works by dispersing light into its component wavelengths (colors) and measuring their intensity. Light from the sample is collected and directed through the collimator. The collimated light is then diffracted by the grating or refracted by the prism, separating it into its spectral components. These components are directed to the detector, which measures their intensity.
