The Special Boat Squadron (SBS) is an elite special forces unit of the Sri Lanka Navy. Established in 1993, the SBS is tasked with conducting maritime special operations, including amphibious warfare, counter-terrorism, and reconnaissance missions. The unit is known for its rigorous training and operational capabilities, making it one of the most formidable maritime special forces in the region.
History[edit]
The Special Boat Squadron was formed in response to the growing need for specialized maritime operations during the Sri Lankan Civil War. Initially trained by the British Special Boat Service, the SBS has since developed its own unique operational tactics and training programs. Over the years, the unit has played a crucial role in various military operations, particularly in the Eastern and Northern provinces of Sri Lanka.
Organization[edit]
The SBS is organized into several squadrons, each specializing in different aspects of maritime operations. The exact size and structure of the unit are classified, but it is known to include:
- Assault Squadrons: Responsible for direct action missions, including raids and assaults on enemy positions.
- Reconnaissance Squadrons: Conduct long-range reconnaissance and intelligence gathering.
- Support Squadrons: Provide logistical and technical support to operational units.
Training[edit]
The training regimen for SBS operatives is one of the most demanding in the Sri Lankan military. Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process, followed by extensive training in diving, parachuting, close-quarters combat, and demolition. The training emphasizes physical endurance, mental resilience, and teamwork.
Operations[edit]
The SBS has been involved in numerous high-profile operations, both during and after the Sri Lankan Civil War. Notable operations include:
- Operation Riviresa: A major offensive to capture the Jaffna Peninsula.
- Operation Balavegaya: An amphibious operation to relieve the besieged Elephant Pass military base.
Equipment[edit]
The SBS is equipped with a range of specialized equipment to support its operations, including:
- Fast Attack Craft: For rapid deployment and extraction.
- Underwater Vehicles: For reconnaissance and mine clearance.
- Specialized Weapons: Including assault rifles, sniper rifles, and explosives.
