South Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Selatan) is a province of Indonesia. It is located in the southeastern part of the island of Borneo. The provincial capital is Banjarmasin, which is also the largest city in the province.

Geography[edit]

South Kalimantan is bordered by Central Kalimantan to the west, East Kalimantan to the north, and the Java Sea to the south. The province covers an area of approximately 37,530.52 square kilometers. The region is characterized by its diverse landscapes, including coastal areas, lowlands, and mountainous regions.

History[edit]

The history of South Kalimantan is closely linked to the history of the Banjar people, the indigenous ethnic group of the region. The area was once part of the Sultanate of Banjar, which played a significant role in the spread of Islam in the region. The sultanate was eventually incorporated into the Dutch East Indies during the colonial period.

Demographics[edit]

The population of South Kalimantan is predominantly Banjar, with significant minorities of Javanese, Bugis, and other ethnic groups. The majority of the population practices Islam, which is the dominant religion in the province.

Economy[edit]

The economy of South Kalimantan is largely based on agriculture, mining, and forestry. The province is rich in natural resources, including coal, gold, and timber. Banjarmasin is a major trade and commercial center, known for its floating markets and river-based commerce.

Culture[edit]

South Kalimantan has a rich cultural heritage, with traditional arts and crafts such as sasirangan (a type of tie-dye fabric), wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), and traditional Banjar music and dance. The province also celebrates various cultural festivals, including the annual Banjarmasin Floating Market Festival.

Tourism[edit]

Tourism is an important sector in South Kalimantan, with attractions such as the Loksado highlands, the Meratus Mountains, and the Martapura diamond market. The province is also known for its unique floating markets, where vendors sell goods from boats on the river.

Administration[edit]

South Kalimantan is divided into 11 regencies (kabupaten) and 2 cities (kota). The regencies are further subdivided into districts (kecamatan) and villages (desa or kelurahan).
