Shunga Empire

== Shunga Empire ==
The Shunga Empire was an ancient Indian dynasty that ruled the central and eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent from around 185 BCE to 75 BCE. The empire was established after the fall of the Maurya Empire and was succeeded by the Kanva Dynasty.
History[edit]
The Shunga Empire was founded by Pushyamitra Shunga, who was a general in the Maurya Empire. He assassinated the last Mauryan ruler, Brihadratha Maurya, during a military parade and declared himself king. Pushyamitra's reign marked the beginning of the Shunga dynasty, which lasted for approximately 112 years.
Administration[edit]
The Shunga Empire was known for its military prowess and administrative efficiency. The empire was divided into several provinces, each governed by a provincial governor. The central administration was headed by the king, who was assisted by a council of ministers.
Culture[edit]
The Shunga period is noted for its cultural and artistic achievements. The empire saw the revival of Hinduism and the promotion of Buddhism. The Shunga rulers were patrons of art and architecture, and their reign saw the construction of several stupas, temples, and monasteries.
Art and Architecture[edit]
The Shunga Empire is renowned for its contributions to Indian art and architecture. The period saw the development of the Mathura school of art and the construction of the Sanchi Stupa. The Shunga art is characterized by its intricate carvings and detailed sculptures.
Economy[edit]
The economy of the Shunga Empire was primarily agrarian, with agriculture being the mainstay. Trade and commerce also flourished during this period, with the empire engaging in both internal and external trade. The Shunga rulers issued coins that facilitated trade and commerce.
Decline[edit]
The decline of the Shunga Empire began with internal strife and succession disputes. The last Shunga ruler, Devabhuti, was overthrown by his minister Vasudeva Kanva, who established the Kanva dynasty. The fall of the Shunga Empire marked the end of their rule and the beginning of the Kanva dynasty.
