Short Story

A Short Story (pronunciation: /ʃɔːrt stɔːri/) is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose. Emerging from earlier oral storytelling traditions in the 17th century, the short story has grown to encompass a body of work so diverse as to defy easy characterization.

Etymology

The term "Short Story" is a combination of the English words "short" and "story". "Short" comes from the Old English sceort or scort, and "story" comes from the Old French estorie, which itself comes from the Latin historia - meaning "history" or "story".

Definition

A short story is a piece of prose fiction that typically can be read in one sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a single effect or mood. The short story is a crafted form in its own right. Short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components as in a novel, but typically to a lesser degree.

Related Terms

  • Flash Fiction: A style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme brevity. There is no widely accepted definition of the length of the category. Some self-described markets for flash fiction impose caps as low as three hundred words, while others consider stories as long as a thousand words to be flash fiction.
  • Novella: A text of written, fictional, narrative prose normally longer than a short story but shorter than a novel.
  • Anthology: A published collection of poems or other pieces of writing.
  • Prose: A form of language that has no formal metrical structure. It applies a natural flow of speech, and ordinary grammatical structure rather than rhythmic structure, such as in the case of traditional poetry.
