Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (born 27 July 1972) is a Malaysian orthopedic surgeon and astronaut. He became the first Malaysian to participate in a spaceflight, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia's history. His journey to space was part of a program under an agreement between the Malaysian and Russian governments, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in space exploration.
Early Life and Education
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in science and aspired to explore the stars. He pursued his education in the field of medicine, earning a degree in medicine and surgery from the Kasturba Medical College, affiliated with Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India. His dedication to his studies and passion for medicine led him to specialize in orthopedic surgery, where he worked diligently to provide care and treatment to his patients.
Astronaut Career
The opportunity for Sheikh Muszaphar to fulfill his dream of space exploration came when Malaysia announced its Angkasawan program. This program was designed to send a Malaysian to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a purchase agreement of Russian-made Sukhoi jets. Sheikh Muszaphar was selected from over 11,000 candidates, undergoing rigorous training and preparation for his mission.
In October 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar flew to the ISS aboard the Soyuz TMA-11 with two other crew members. During his mission, he conducted experiments in the fields of microbiology, genetics, and biophysics, contributing valuable data to the scientific community. His experiments included the study of the growth of liver cancer and leukemia cells, and the crystallization of various proteins and microbes in space.

Sheikh Muszaphar's spaceflight was a source of national pride for Malaysia, inspiring many young Malaysians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
