Seventh-day Adventist

Seventh-day Adventist (pronunciation: /ˈsɛv.ənθ deɪ ˈæd.vən.tɪst/) is a denomination of Christianity that emphasizes the imminent Second Coming (Advent) of Jesus Christ. The name refers to the church's observance of the "seventh day" or Saturday, as the Sabbath, and the advent, or second coming of Jesus Christ.

Etymology

The term "Seventh-day Adventist" is derived from the church's observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week according to the biblical, or Judaic calendar, and the advent, or anticipated second coming of Jesus Christ. The term was officially adopted by the church in 1860.

Beliefs

Seventh-day Adventists believe in the Trinity, that God is three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. They believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible, and that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. They also believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal life.

Practices

Seventh-day Adventists observe the Sabbath from Friday evening to Saturday evening. They practice adult baptism by immersion, and they celebrate the Lord's Supper quarterly, which includes foot-washing as a symbol of humility and service.

Health and Diet

Seventh-day Adventists promote a healthy lifestyle and a vegetarian diet, following the dietary laws outlined in the Book of Leviticus. They also abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and the use of illegal drugs.

Education

The Seventh-day Adventist Church operates a comprehensive education system from kindergarten through university level. They believe in the holistic development of individuals, integrating faith, learning, and service.
