Sestamibi Scan

A Sestamibi Scan (pronounced ses-ta-mi-bi scan) is a type of nuclear medicine imaging test that uses a small amount of radioactive material to diagnose or predict the severity of certain diseases.

Etymology

The term "Sestamibi" is an abbreviation for Sestamethoxyisobutylisonitrile. It is a type of Technetium (99mTc) compound used in nuclear medicine for the imaging of certain tissues.

Procedure

The Sestamibi Scan involves the injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer, usually Technetium-99m Sestamibi, into the patient's bloodstream. The tracer travels through the blood and accumulates in certain tissues, which can then be imaged using a special camera that detects radioactivity.

The scan is most commonly used to image the parathyroid glands and the heart. In parathyroid imaging, the scan is used to identify hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid glands produce too much hormone. In cardiac imaging, the scan is used to identify areas of the heart that may not be receiving enough blood.
