SeaKeys is a project initiated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in collaboration with several other institutions. The project aims to collect and distribute data on marine biodiversity in South Africa. The project is funded by the Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP).

Overview

The SeaKeys project was launched in 2014 with the primary goal of filling the gaps in knowledge about South Africa's marine biodiversity. The project focuses on four main areas: marine Alien and Invasive Species, marine fish, marine invertebrates, and coral reefs.

Objectives

The main objectives of the SeaKeys project are to:

  • Collect and distribute data on South Africa's marine biodiversity
  • Increase the knowledge and awareness of marine biodiversity in South Africa
  • Provide tools and resources for the management and conservation of South Africa's marine biodiversity

Partners

The SeaKeys project is a collaborative effort involving several institutions. These include the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), and the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Impact

The SeaKeys project has had a significant impact on the understanding and conservation of marine biodiversity in South Africa. The data collected by the project has been used to inform policy decisions and conservation strategies.
