School nursing
School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students. School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
History[edit]
The concept of school nursing was first introduced in the United States in the late 19th century. Lina Rogers Struthers, a public health nurse, was the first school nurse in the United States, appointed in New York City in 1902. The primary role of early school nurses was to reduce absenteeism by intervening with students and families regarding healthcare needs related to communicable diseases.
Role and Responsibilities[edit]
The role of the school nurse encompasses both clinical and community health care aspects. School nurses are often responsible for health screenings, immunization compliance, and health education. They also serve as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment.
Health Education[edit]
School nurses play a crucial role in health education. They provide students with knowledge about health and wellness and equip them with the skills needed to make healthy decisions. This includes education on topics such as nutrition, physical activity, mental health, substance use, and sexual health.
Case Management[edit]
School nurses provide case management services for students with chronic health conditions and special needs. They develop healthcare plans for these students, coordinate care with healthcare providers and families, and monitor the student's health status.
Challenges[edit]
School nursing faces several challenges, including a lack of understanding about the role of school nurses, inadequate staffing, and limited resources. Despite these challenges, school nurses continue to play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of students.
