Saybrook College is one of the fourteen residential colleges of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Established in 1933, it is one of the original residential colleges created under the Yale residential college system.

History[edit]

Saybrook College was named after Saybrook, Connecticut, the location of the original Yale College before it moved to New Haven. The college was designed by the architectural firm of James Gamble Rogers, who also designed several other buildings at Yale. The college's construction was part of a larger initiative funded by Edward S. Harkness, a Yale alumnus and philanthropist, to create a residential college system similar to those at Oxford University and Cambridge University.

Architecture[edit]

The architecture of Saybrook College is primarily Collegiate Gothic, a style that was popular for academic buildings in the early 20th century. The college features a central courtyard, a dining hall, a library, and several student dormitories. Notable architectural elements include the Harkness Tower, which is shared with Branford College, and the Memorial Gate, which commemorates Yale alumni who died in World War I.

Traditions[edit]

Saybrook College has a number of unique traditions. One of the most well-known is the annual "Saybrook Strip," where students strip down to their underwear during the final home football game of the season. The college also has a mascot, the Saybrook "Squirrel," and a distinctive cheer, "Saybrook, Saybrook, Saybrook!"

Student Life[edit]

Students in Saybrook College participate in a variety of activities, including intramural sports, arts and cultural events, and community service projects. The college has its own student government, known as the Saybrook College Council, which organizes events and advocates for student interests.

Notable Alumni[edit]

Saybrook College has produced many notable alumni, including:
