Saxifraga stolonifera, commonly known as the strawberry begonia, strawberry geranium, or creeping saxifrage, is a species of flowering plant in the Saxifragaceae family. It is native to Asia, found in countries such as China, Japan, and Korea. This plant is appreciated for its attractive foliage and delicate flowers, making it a popular choice for gardens and as a houseplant.

Description

Saxifraga stolonifera is a perennial plant that spreads via runners, similar to strawberry plants, hence one of its common names. It has heart-shaped, green leaves with silver veins and a red underside, which add to its ornamental value. The plant produces white flowers with two yellow spots and five petals, which appear on tall, thin stalks above the foliage in the summer.

Habitat and Cultivation

Saxifraga stolonifera prefers shady to semi-shady locations with well-drained, moist soil. It is hardy to USDA zones 6 through 9, making it suitable for outdoor cultivation in many temperate regions. However, in colder climates, it is often grown as a houseplant. The plant's ability to spread through runners can be both an advantage for covering ground and a disadvantage if it invades spaces where it is not wanted.

Uses

Beyond its ornamental use, Saxifraga stolonifera has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for its purported health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited.

Propagation

Propagation of Saxifraga stolonifera is primarily through division or by planting the small plantlets that form at the ends of its runners. This makes it easy to share and spread the plant among gardeners.

Conservation

While Saxifraga stolonifera is not currently listed as endangered, its natural habitats are threatened by human activities such as urbanization and agriculture. Conservation efforts are important to preserve its native ecosystems.
